The Department of Educational Psychology pursues a mission rooted in research, teaching, and service and community engagement. Faculty research focuses on two broad aims: (1) the study and application of psychological theories to develop educational experiences—collectively, faculty members realize this aim through basic, applied, and translational research that explores all facets of the learning sciences – cognition, life-span development, socio-emotional and socio-cultural development, technology, mental health and well-being, and achievement in formal and informal educational contexts, and (2) approaches to educational inquiry and the development of quantitative, qualitative, and evaluative methodologies that underpin the development of evidence-based, policy-relevant studies. Through their teaching, research, and mentorship, Educational Psychology faculty prepare students at all levels for professional careers as university professors, teachers, scientist-practitioners in the field of counseling, researchers, evaluators, testing and measurement specialists, and data scientists.
Our students find fulfilling careers in academia as well as both the public and the private sectors. The department’s long tradition of service and community engagement has forged continuing connections to and cooperative projects with local, national, and international organizations seeking to develop interventions and programs that focus on education and well-being, with the goal of improving outcomes across the lifespan.
