The College of Education presents its Dean’s Distinguished Speaker Series for 2025-26, titled Boldly Education: Leading the Future of Education. The series is inspired by the College’s 2028 Strategic Vision, which aims to produce transformative research, prepare graduates to steward meaningful change, and advance educational equity.

Our Speakers

Keena Arbuthnot, Ed.M. '02, Ph.D. '05 EPSY, serves as the executive vice president for academic affairs and chief academic officer at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, where she has led the advancement of academic priorities and policies since 2025. In this role, she works closely with Rutgers’ chancellor-led units to align academic resources, support institutional goals, and strengthen student and faculty success. Her career spans key leadership positions in research administration, faculty and student development, and teaching, with a focus on data-driven decision making that enhances institutional effectiveness and fosters innovation in learning. An alumna of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she earned her Ph.D. in educational psychology, Dr. Arbuthnot has been a consistent champion for initiatives that expand educational access and promote student achievement.

Y. Barry Chung, M.A. '91, Ph.D. '96 EPSY, is the Dean of the College of Education at San Diego State University and an accomplished scholar whose career includes leadership roles at Indiana University Bloomington, Northeastern University, and Georgia State University. A native of Hong Kong, he earned his A.M. and Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his B.A. from National Taiwan Normal University. His work focuses on career development, multicultural counseling, and sexual orientation and gender diversity, and he has contributed extensively to the field through publications, invited presentations, and editorial service. Dr. Chung has held major national leadership roles—serving as president of three professional associations and on multiple American Psychological Association boards—and is a Fellow of several national organizations. He is the recipient of prominent honors, including the National Career Development Association Eminent Career Award and the APA Award for Distinguished Contributions to Education and Training in Psychology.

Shireen Pavri, Ph.D. '95 SPED, serves as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Educator and Leadership Programs at the California State University Chancellor’s Office, advocating for educator preparation at the state and national levels and supporting campuses in achieving equity and excellence in educator and leader preparation. Along with her team, she provides vision and support for the CSU’s commitment to prepare high-quality teachers, counselors, psychologists, and leaders, coordinates the CSU’s contributions to PK-12 reform, and supports the academic preparation of PK-12 students to ensure they are prepared for college success. Beginning her career as a multilingual special education teacher in Mumbai, India, Dr. Pavri has achieved more than 30 years of experience in teaching, school psychology, research, and leadership, including 13 years as dean and associate dean at Cal State Long Beach. She has published and presented widely in the areas of special education and school psychology and has served as Principal Investigator on multiple federal, state, and foundation grants. Dr. Pavri is a proud alumna of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, having earned her PhD in Special Education. She serves on several advisory committees and boards, including the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, the WestEd Board of Directors, and the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE).
